Style Re-Make!!

I must say that this Style Re-Make is not truly my best.  However, I wanted to share it with you guys because not everything we do comes out looking picture perfect.  Though I'm a cosmetologist by profession, I still have to practice certain styles until they come out right, mostly on me.  It seems that it is always harder to do hair styles on yourself, rather than others.
This Style Re-Make is actually from ForeverCurlyCatrina. Catrina has her own Fotki and YouTube page.  Click on the link to follower her on Fotki.  I actually did a Style Re-Make of Catrina's work during the summer.  You guys remember this style:
Only seeing the image and not knowing who she was I could not give her, her props.

This is a quick and simple style.  I placed four big corn rolls going to the right side of my head.  In Catrina's photo her hair is long enough for her to put her excess her in to a bun, however, since my hair is not that long yet I had to improvise.
Original (ForeverCurlyCatrina)                                                                            Style Re-Make

This style lasted me for four days.  It could have lasted longer but I did it during the middle of my wash week. However, learning from this style, the next style I will be doing for this week
should come out better (I'm hoping J)

  Tell me what you think???

1 Year Anniversary!!

That's right, today marks my 1year Natural Hair Anniversary since I BC'd!!  The time has went by  sooo fast.  I wanted to share a few pics of my hair from this past year.

This is my first Braid Out       My first Bantu Knot      My first Wash and Go
While Transitioning                Out after my BC             After my BC
                                                11.28.2009

My Hair 1 Year Later (11.28.2010)

It's funny how time passes!

While on this 1year journey I have learned so much.  Like heat may not always be your friend.  Moisturizing is your best friend.  You can never over deep condition.  Just because your ends look dry doesn't mean they need to be trimmed, they could just need more moisture.

Though this first year has had it's up and downs, I feel that I have definitely made the right decision in going natural.  I can't wait until my two year.

Turkey Hair!

During this time of the year many people travel to visit family.  For many of us naturals, this will be the first time our family and friends will see our hair "Natural."  For me this was the case.  My husband and I traveled to see some of our family, so I wanted to make sure I looked fly.  Not really knowing what to do with my hair I came up with a really cute look.

Since the heat damage situation, I've been wearing my hair in a lot of braid outs.  This was the case for me this week.  So with my four day braid out I swept my hair over to the right side and did a small pom adore in the front; and of course I rocked one of our hair flowers.  With five family houses later, this quick and cute hair style held up pretty well.

I recived a lot of complaments from my family, and everyone liked the flower :0)!

How did you wear your hair this Turkey Day?

Mini Braids!! New Video!!

From time to time we like to give our hair a rest.  Many like to do twist or mini twist which last longer than regular twist along with the versatility of different styles.  But instead of mini twist have you ever thought about mini braids? Here is Nerddyful showing how she achieved her cute style.

Winter Hair!!

For some of us natural heads winter has fallen upon us.  There is so many information out there for taking care of our natural curls, but, at the end of the day you have to do what is right for you and your hair.  These are a few quick tips of ways that have helped me take care of my hair during the winter months.

Moisturize

We read this and hear this all of the time from most naturals.  However, moisturizing ones curls during the winter months are essential.  Keeping our curls moisturized helps our hair from drying out from the cold weather.  It also helps our scalp to replenish the oils that it loses during this time of the year.

In the winter our scalp makes less oil, which in turn leaves our hair drier.  Some ways to add moisture to your hair is by deep conditioning regularly (I do not recommend using a protein deep conditioner every week this is because too much protein to the hair can cause breakage.  Protein treatment should be used no more than twice a month and less if not at all if you Henna).

Also, hot oil treatments are great for your hair and scalp.  Do not feel that you have to use the pre-made oil treatments from your local beauty supply store.  Feel free to explore new oils and use what you know your hair likes.  My hair loves olive oil and castor oil. So once a month I do a hot oil treatment using those oils.

Massage Your Scalp

Massaging the scalp is great way to stimulate the natural oil our scalp produces and it also feels good!  I like to massage my scalp before I wash my hair and after I wash (or co-wash) my hair right after I apply my oils to my scalp.  I also do this throughout the week while I spray my homemade spritzer onto my hair.

During those cold winter nights have your significant have a part and allow them to rub their hands in your hair and massage your scalp.  Not only will it benefit your scalp and hair it can also start up something else ;0)

Seal Your Ends

This is very easy to do and you can use your favorite sealer.  I like using Shea butter.

Use Creamy Shampoos and Conditioners

Using creamier based products like shampoos and conditions allow the hair to soak up more moisture.  This season I changed co-washing my hair from Suave Professionals to Aussie Moist.  I love this stuff!! It’s really creamy and I can feel a difference when I co-wash my hair during the winter.

That is it for me.  Some say they like to do protective styles and others like to line their hats and hoods with silk and other people do different things, but as for me these are some of the most essential things to consider when caring for your hair in the winter.

HEAT DAMAGE!!

That's right, I have heat damage.  I know I have been away for a while, but things have been so crazy!! My husband recently got a great new J.O.B  in Baltimore, MD.  They only allowed us two weeks to move our whole lives from Atlanta to Baltimore.  So it has been tiredless nights and a lot of good byes from our close friends.

So in order to celebrate my hubby 's new success, I decided that I would wear his favorite hair style, which is the straight, flat iron look.  In the past, I have flat ironed my hair and had no problem, but not this time!! One of the biggest mistakes I think I made was that I bought a new flat iron. Instead of just testing it out, I used it on my whole head, not really knowing how my hair was going to react to it.  Nevertheless, my hair hated it! It got really hot, and on top of that my hair was really puffy the next day.  I wore this style for less than 24hrs, and got major heat damage in the front of my hair!!

I was doing some research and I was told that a lot of good deep conditioning treatments would help.  I hope so, because like all of us naturals, we work really hard to take care of our hair, and it just makes me feel like I'm back to square one with this damage.

Ladies, just pray that most of my hair will convert back with extra love and attention.

In the mean time any suggestions???
